Ice

Today I got onto my favourite local trail for the first time since coming back from my winter travels to Vancouver Island and Barbados. This is what I saw as I approached the entrance to the trail.

Hmmm. Wonder why this barrier was put up by the City?

Well, it didn’t take me long to figure out why the City was trying to discourage people from using the trail.

Ice, ice everywhere. Except on the boardwalks.
Thick and bumpy. But still slippery!
Slide marks from previous walkers…er…sliders. It quickly became apparent that sliding was the safest way to go, in most places.

Just how thick is this ice? Glad you asked. I found a place where there was a crack in the ice, just so I could show you.

Crack in the ice shows its depth.
Close up of 2 inch thick ice coating the trail.

Ice was also found on the river, of course. Nice to observe, from a less slippery vantage point on the shore.

Weirdly beautiful ice formation on the river.
Ice shelf near the bank of Chilligo Creek.

I didn’t fall. Didn’t break or strain anything. But also didn’t walk (er…slide) as far as I intended when I set out this morning. But it was worth it as I got quite close (for a change) to a couple of these guys:

Rock on,

The WB

p.s. this is my first post using the new block editor in WordPress. So far I really like it. Reminds me a bit of using MS Word, so somewhat familiar to me. However, I don’t like how my images are being compressed, but I’ll sort that out later…right now I have to figure out whether to start watching Drag Race Season 10 or American Gods Season 2 or (insert some other show that got released recently and I’ve already forgotten what it is). You know: Sunday evening priorities.

p.p.s. oh, and fingers crossed the email announcing this post gets sent out this time. Last post it didn’t work (2nd time this has happened to me) and I haven’t a clue as to why. #bloggerwoes

That ice is going to take a long time to melt! Looks like my driveway did a couple of weeks ago.

I love the swans! Can’t tell if you shot that in black and white or what but it’s a beautiful photograph.

    Hi Deb,
    BTW, got the email!
See that ice? That’s why I’m not in New England right now!
Time for St. Paddy’s Day green beer under the Tiki Hut.

    1. Yahoo! The plugin told me the emails were sent this time, so that was my first clue it might have actually worked. Thanks for confirming! Enjoy your green beer Nancy!

  3. Hmmm – got the email, wouldn’t let me *like* your post, wouldn’t recognize my WP credentials …. hoping it will recognize my login.
Not sure yet whether we have success :/

I’m still avoiding trails. I’ve been lucky on a few, but mostly they are still icy and treacherous. The good news is that spring is definitely in the air!!!

Glad to hear you like the new editor. I’m quite ok with it. It was intimidating at first but it’s really quite easy.

    1. Damn it! I got a couple of updates on the Email Subscriber plug-in and thought whatever issues there were had been ironed out (cuz clearly 2 updates in a week means there WERE problems).
Hooray for spring being in the air! Now it’s got to start working on the ground 🥶.

  4. Gorgeous photos Deb – and SO different to our weather here Down Under – I have no concept of ice that thick and it looks pretty scary with the slide factor taken into consideration! I’ll just stick with my sunshine thanks – and I bet those swans were well padded to withstand the freezing water temps!

    1. Thanks Leanne! I don’t know how the birds manage, really. No matter how cold it is outside, if there’s open water you will see ducks, geese, herons and swans in it!

  5. Ice is so treacherous and I can see why you had a shorter walk than you intended. Your photos are beautiful. I’m in denial about the WP editor, but your experience gives me hope.

    1. The ice is in Ontario. No ice on Vancouver Island – at least not while I was there. Nope, have not watched that show or much of its predecessor, Breaking Bad – which was incredibly hard for me to watch as the main character has lung cancer (which my husband died of). Brings back all the emotions and memories of that dark time.

  6. We are living on thick ice, too. The road ruts are so deep on side streets you can only drive about 10 km hour. And the potholes! Bring on spring!
