What’s On Your Plate Blog Challenge – Bingeing on Universal Yum Boxes Edition

Whoo boy! It has been a time since Donna and I reviewed a Universal Yum box, hasn’t it? Between my summer of endless moving/renovating and Donna’s summer of endlessly being away from home, I think we saw each other once in 3 months. The Universal Yum boxes continued to keep coming of course, and I managed not to lose any in all the upheaval. When Donna and I finally got together in August (briefly), we cracked open the May (yes, May!!!) box, which happened to be from the UK.

UK box contents

Now, I usually show pictures and writeups of each individual item when I do a box but not this time. Because I would be at my computer all day creating this post, and you would be on your devices all day reading this post and no one wants that to happen! Because gentle reader, there are 3 more boxes to come!!!

Our scoring of the UK snack box.
After all of hard work, we walked to my new “local”, for a pint (and a curry). In keeping with the theme, ya know 😉.

So, due to all the craziness of the past couple of months (moving, helping my sister move, more moving, hosting a friend for a week, still more moving…) I never did get around to posting the May in August box. Until now that is. Last week Donna and I were able to get together again for the first time since August, and I brought over the June, July and August boxes (and I still have September and October in my closet, with a notice to pick up November at the post office!).

Thailand, India and South America (June, July, and August).
Ready to begin!
Thailand scorecard. Me: The box only has 2 things in it! Also Me: Thank gawd…
India scorecard. Also several items missing in action.
South America scorecard. A complete box, at last.
Donna whipped up a delicious board for us to nosh on, afterwards. To balance all of the sugar. We forgot to take a selfie for the 3 boxes. Blame it on the snack overload. I did.

Four boxes down and 3 more to go. I’m actually glad the subscription is coming to an end, even though I’ve enjoyed it, enjoyed sharing it, and enjoyed blogging about it. Seeing all those boxes pile up though…overwhelming!

If you’re dying to know about a particular snack, please let me know in the Comments and I’ll give you the deets. Otherwise, please accept this half-assed offering for this month’s WOYPBC!

Please share with Donna and/or myself what’s on your plate this month! I’ve cheated with this month’s post, and Donna has done the same (yet differently). Please check her out here! And here’s the Link Party, if you are so inclined.

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

That’s always the problem with falling behind on a regular sign-up, it can end up feeling overwhelming – almost a burden. Even when it’s something you really enjoy. I do that far too often – sign up for all kinds of stuff that I really want to do, and then find myself feeling almost put upon! 😀

A tad intrigued to know what the UK “stuff” was, but what’s way more important is to see you indulging in a pint and a curry!

    1. The UK box had a snack called pickled onion rings, a toffee, something called a chocolate flapjack, tiny black currant sweets (millions), lamb and rosemary crisps (my favourite!), rhubarb custard candies, and another caramel-ly type candy. Recognize anything? Thanks, Debs 💕

Sadly, the picked onion rings sound familiar (if a tad revolting). Lamb and rosemary crisps sound yummy. Also the chocolate flapjack is the kind of thing I pick up when on a long drive on my own and needing a “healthy” boost of energy. Well, they have oats ‘n stuff…. 😉

  2. I would like a subscription to those treats from around the world. They’d be fun to bring down to lunch to share. I’ve enjoyed you blogging about them. Did you contact the company about the missing treats? Was it Covid/supply line issues?

That is so cool that you’ve got a place to get a pint within walking distance! I don’t know what a curry is.

    1. A curry is an Indian dish, made with meat and/or vegetables in a curried sauce. Very popular in England as well as in India where the cuisine originates. There are all kinds of curries – chicken, spinach, eggplant to name a few. No, I did not contact them about the missing items as I was glad to have less candy to have to sample, truly! 😁 Thanks, Jean 💕

Hi Deb – I too couldn’t decipher what the UK box contained – then the pint and curry definitely sound a better deal … and I think a year’s worth of boxes is probably enough … but really entertaining to see the photos and ‘hear’ the banter between you … cheers Hilary

    1. Yes! Thank you for recognizing Bowser and his cleverness – it was the first thing that crossed my mind – but then I realized that the box was sealed until I opened it at Donna’s, so it couldn’t have been that sly dog 😉. Thanks, Janis 💕

  4. I have a stomach ache now just reading about all these tastings. It’s sure nice to see you two together again, though. Happy you were able to enjoy some real food.

I want to know where Donna got that t-shirt!? I want one and it would make great gifts for some of my more cynical friends.

  6. Hi Deb I can only imagine the fun you and Donna have when you are together. Photos I see of you together just shine with friendship. These boxes look like fun and it must have seemed like your birthday opening all your gifts at once! Thanks for hosting WOYP and bringing a smile to me. x

    1. Sure, you say that now…but what if all 3 are complete and stuffed with sugary “goodness”, hmmmm? 😉 Thank you for making these box openings so much fun with your creative flair and supplementary yummy foods, my friend 💕

  7. These snack boxes are such a treat. As in watching you two eat, judge, and smile your way through them. That being said, I’d be more into the cheese plate than the sweets. I’m weird like that.

    1. Not weird at all, Ally! Donna and I sample the sweets very sparingly, as in cutting individual candies in half so as not to overload on sugar. Then we dove into the cheese plate with gusto! Thanks 💕

  8. I imagine you two are a hoot while enjoying/rating the YUM boxes. I love your notes on each item…so funny. How cool is it that you can WALK to a local pub and have a pint? SO COOL.

    1. Well, it’s not the classiest pub and it seems to be a favourite with bikers, but the beer is cold and they have an Indian cook so some lovely curries on the menu. Yes, walking to and fro is a plus, especially when indulging 😉. Thanks, Suz 💕

  9. I had a random thought the other day and it was “whatever happened” to Deb’s boxes of treats? And then this popped up. Like you read my mind. 🤣🤣

Here's where the magic happens. I love comments!
