Silent Saturday – Cable Bay Trail and Dodd Narrows

Now that Summer 2021 is firmly in the rearview mirror and my second fall on the island is in progress, I have decided to make it a goal to explore 1 new-to-me trail per week. Earlier this week I headed out to experience the Cable Bay Trail (and Joan Point Park and Dodd Narrows) in Cedar. Cable Bay Trail is apparently one of the top-ranked forest trails on Vancouver Island. And Dodd Narrows is known for sea life (sea lions and orcas) frolicking in its strong current. (Unfortunately no frolicking during my hike, which occurred at high tide…only 1 lonely sea lion seen although many were heard!) Here are some photos of this walk. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them.

  1. Great pictures of a beautiful hike (and another to add to my ever-growing “next time” list). Fun fact: the university I attended (UC Santa Cruz) has the banana slug as their mascot (Go Banana Slugs!). Although, the banana slugs that were in the woods around the campus were much yellower.

    1. Well, colour me surprised – I would never have guessed that “banana slugs” would be used for a sports team 😁. The banana slugs around here come in varied colours, from black to yellow. Definitely add this one to your list! Thanks, Janis 💕

I LOVE Dodd’s Narrows and Cable Bay Trails! I am doing the couch potato thing this weekend so will be ready and raring to hike any trail that you like later in the week. Let me know what works for you!

Gorgeous scenery. I had hoped to be doing a lot of hiking at the moment, but lockdown has prevented it. Hopefully soon!

  4. Lovely photos, Deb! Am quite envious on several counts – first, that you’ve got so many trails/so much natural growth left to explore; and second, that you feel safe exploring it on your own!
I lived in the Santa Cruz Mts. in California for a year, and really enjoyed it. Now I find myself disappointed with the 10-ft swath of growth between my apartment complex and the 4-lane road. Can’t imagine why . . . 😆

    1. Hmmm…that is unfortunate! Yeah, I live on an island that is Hikers’ Heaven so I am little disappointed in myself that I have not done more exploring to date. Oh wait…there was that little thing called a pandemic and we had to stay in our communities…OK, I can give myself a pass for that but no longer have an excuse! Thanks, Del 💕

  5. I suspect you will have no shortage of trails to explore in your area! It’s always fun to be a tourist & explore what is in your own backyard. Enjoy!

Hi Deb – great reminders of what I saw in VI … it’s a stunning part of the world, so much ‘freedom in incredible areas of the world’ – enjoy those explorations and looking forward to more of your wanderings! Cheers Hilary
