Still Not 100%, however…

Happy Pride Month, everybody! Welcome to June!

The last part of May was not fun for me, people.

Not only sick, but had 3 events to attend. This is my desk calendar for keeping track of exercise/step goals. “One Mile Walk ‘n Talks” are You Tube exercise videos I start my days with.

I almost never get sick so I’m not very good at recognizing OR dealing with it as it happens. And boy, did it happen to me!  When I wrote about it here, I was thinking I was on the mend already.

First, it started off as a stomach bug which when it passed, lulled me into thinking I was better. Only to be struck down yet again, this time by a head/chest cold/flu. Whatever. I don’t really know if I was hit by 2 separate bugs or one extremely evil one.

I even had to be driven home from work one day because I was so dizzy that I was told I could not drive myself home. (I think this was a bad reaction to the cold medication I was taking, rather than the evil virus itself. It was embarrassing, to say the least.)

Anywho, this time I REALLY AM on the mend. Still coughing a bit, but ambulatory at last.

And, being ambulatory, I got myself out on my local trail this morning. So many lovely things to see. Behold:

I found these Ladyslipper Orchids for the first time last year and was so hoping I’d come across them again. Looks like it’s a colony and it’s growing. More flowers than last year. Squee!!!!
The fungus among us.
Woodpecker “sculptors” hard at work at one point…
Forget Me Nots
Clump of Yellow Flag at riverside. Nature is the best gardener, doncha think?
Close up of Blue Flag flower
Not sure what this is, and my Audubon guide was no help either. A type of dogwood, perhaps? Maybe not even a wild shrub, but a leftover from a previous homestead? (Addendum: According to the iNaturalist app (thanks Joanne!), this is a Mapleleaf Viburnum).
Audubon says this is Common Barberry.
Wild-type rose (?) planted in city garden. Smelled lovely. Captured on the way back from my walk.

So wonderful to be able to get out and ENJOY once again. Good health is so under-rated and taken for granted!

Rock on,

The WB

  1. Hi, Deb – I am so sorry to hear that you’ve been so ill. I’m glad that you are on the mend for real now. Take care of yourself and don’t rush (which I would totally do….I am much better at giving advice than following it)!
I love the photos that you have posted. There is so much beauty to behold everywhere!

Glad you are feeling better. Give yourself time to heal! You sure captured some great plant life on your walk.I especially like the woodpecker ‘art.’

  3. Hi Deb. Whoa, I had no idea you were still feeling so lousy. You may find it irritating, but I’m going to do my Susie Sunshine routine on you and tell you that was your body forcing a shutdown for some repair and regeneration so that you can fully enjoy the summer to come. The photos from your recent walk tell us that this enforced shutdown worked 🙂 Love them, Deb- and thanks for identifying the Blue Flag flower. Some spring up between some rocks on my place every spring and I had no idea what they were.
Stay well now! Summer is here. Karen

  4. I’m happy to hear you are finally on the mend. I’ve talked to a few other people who were levelled in the past month by a sudden oncoming bug. They were told it was likely the Norwalk virus and from the sound of it, it’s a possibility that’s what got you … although that nasty bit of cold was likely *just* as tag-along.

Spring flowers are the loveliest. From the look of your photos, the river walk is a great place to see them. The Common Barberry photo is my favourite. What a pretty tree!!

    1. Thanks! It IS a pretty tree, Joanne. At first I thought it was a laburnum (another pretty tree with droopy yellow flowers, although not a wild one). Was on a footpath, not the trail proper when I noticed it. Had never seen one in bloom before.

      1. You might be interested in an app I downloaded recently called the iNaturalist. You simply take a photo of a plant’s leaves or flower and it will tell you what it is. I’ve tested it on a few things I already knew – some leaves, some flowers, and it identified it without any problem.

(((hugs))) on being sick. I’m glad you are feeling better – and getting out into some fresh air is a great idea because with pretty sights like the ones you photographed you have to feel better =)

  6. I hate to read about someone getting ill like you’ve been. I agree that good health is something that’s easy to take for granted. Hoping that this comment finds you feeling better. Your photos are the picture of health. May you be like them!

  7. Hi Deb! Glad to year that you are mending for sure…and I am certain that a nature walk is one of the best remedies you could find for yourself. It does suck to get sick and I’m definitely one of those people who just hunkers down and waits it out until it is over…but sometimes that is really hard. Keep healing and we all look forward to hearing where you go from here 🙂 ~Kathy

  8. I loved all those beautiful flower photos – I often wonder if being sick and then recovering makes us appreciate the the things around us more – kind of like Lazarus rising from the dead? Glad you’re feeling better and thanks for visiting Donna’s guest post on my blog x
