The Sunday Schnauzer – Bowser Has A Houseguest

Meet Poppy:

A 14 year old Chihuahua, Poppy stayed with Bowser and Mommy and Daddy last week while his mommy was out of the country.
Poppy, showing off his BDE (Big Dog Energy). It is usually short-lived ๐Ÿคฃ, but we love his enthusiasm.
Bowser is not a fan of the new, slower pace to our walks.
He also wonders why Poppy must pee all over the places he, Bowser, has just peed upon.
Partway through each shortened walk, Poppy starts flagging and gets zipped into Mommy’s jacket. He likes being treated like the king that he is ๐Ÿ‘‘.
Bowser usually wants to play more than Poppy, which leads to Poppy becoming even more of a grumbly old man than he already is. But at least they are very good at napping together.
We have nicknamed Poppy “the coffee pot”, as he makes noises like a percolating coffee machine. A LOT. It gives us anxiety as we try to figure out what is bothering him, if in fact he is bothered. Is this a Chihuahua thing? Anyways, I like him best when he is at rest. Then I know he is relaxed.

Bowser has been spending even more time at my house this past week, to give each dog a break from the other. I can’t say that I am mad about that ๐Ÿ˜‰.

Bowser and I, chillin’ like villains in front of the fire after a rainy walk.

It’s been an interesting week! Who knew Bowser could appear to be practically zen-like, in comparison? ๐Ÿคฃ

Rock on,

The WB

  1. I did not realise you were a Schnauzer owner! I have two! Wonderful dogs. I hope Bowser is slowly adjusting to the guest. Some Schnauzers are better as only dogs. So intelligent but stubborn.

    1. I used to be a schnauzer owner. Now I am a schnauzer grandmother ๐Ÿ˜. Bowser belongs to my daughter and son-in-law, but because we live on the same property (separate dwellings), he considers me part of his pack. They certainly are stubborn dogs, arenโ€™t they? ๐Ÿคฃ Thanks for the comment! ๐Ÿ’•

      1. Schnauzer Mum and Grandmum here. Stubborn, yes but so smart, intuitive and so very lovable. I do not look forward to the day when my life isn’t accompanied by a wet beardy kiss through the day! Lol.
Did you have a mini or a standard yourself?

        1. Not currently, no. Iโ€™ve had 2 minis in the past though and always thought Iโ€™d get another one once I retired. But I feel no need to get a dog of my own now that I have Bowser in my life. For me, mini Schnauzers are the perfect dog – hardy enough for any outdoor activities, small and cuddly enough for inside, smart and loyal to a fault.๐Ÿ’•

          1. I had a Standard Schnauzer, a rescue dog for almost 13 years. The best dog that ever lived! Now standards are very hard to come by here and there are a lot of advantages to having a Miniature Schnauzer. Easier to groom and pick up for starters. My dog is so much more a lapdog than our Standard was, and my daughter’s dog thinks she is invincible. Such wonderful company and I agree loyal to a fault.

  2. Oh my. What a cute house guest. I know what you mean about yours seeming calm in comparison. We went on a walk last werkend with a friend and her dog aggressive cocker. He lunged and spun on his leash the entire (short) walk. Penny looked absolutely sedate in comparison. Which she is not. At all. Ever.

Hi Deb – well they each have character don’t they? It’s good of Bowser’s Mom and Dad to look after Poppy – not sure I understand why Poppy is a boy – but what do I know living in England! Cheers – I’m sure Bowser is as happy as you – fire and all – where’s the crumpets (one each! ??). Hilary

    1. We were very impressed with Bowserโ€™s manners regarding the interloper. It probably helped that Bowser wanted to snack on said interloperโ€™s food whenever he got the chance ๐Ÿคฃ. Thanks, Kate ๐Ÿ’•

    1. It sounded more like near-constant whining or complaining than a breathing issue. Poppy didnโ€™t make those noises when sleeping or when he was being cuddled or otherwise doing something he seemed happier doing. We chalked it up to nerves. Thanks, Rivergirl ๐Ÿ’•

    1. Poppy did valiantly try to keep up on our walks but we were careful to attend to him when he showed the first signs of flagging. If only our kids would do the same, right? ๐Ÿคฃ Thanks, Suzanne ๐Ÿ’•

  4. Small dogs like pugs and chihuahuas tend to have a LOT of respiratory issues. I see he’s perfected the small dog routine of “I’m so tired, you must pick me up”. And you fell for it ๐Ÿ˜

Oh gosh, the over-peeing must’ve been most confusing for poor Bowzer. After all, he’s used to being the king of his castle and the surrounding lands! It looks extremely cozy in front of that lovely fire of yours Deb ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Poppy was cute, but now I know for sure chihuahuas are not the breed for me, ever. Bowser was really good at sharing his space – I was impressed. Thanks, Ally ๐Ÿ’•

  6. My chiweenie’s boyfriend is Milton the Schnauzer, and they get along great. The coffee pot is a chihuahua thing. Not a lot of room for air in that little throat and nose.

    1. Bowser wanted to play with Poppy but he wasnโ€™t having it. Maybe if Poppy was youngerโ€ฆIโ€™m glad Carole Baskin has a Schnauzer friend! Thanks, Kieran ๐Ÿ’•
