Summertime, and the living’ is easy.
And nothing is easier than wearing a summer uniform.
I have 2 pairs of short loose-legged pants…not sure what the proper term is…culottes, cropped pants? Whatever. I love them. But they are old. At least 10 years old. And I anticipate they won’t last much longer and I don’t know where to find their replacements, in terms of quality and fabric.
These pants travel like a dream. They can be hand washed in a hotel room sink, wrung out, and be dry and wrinkle-free in the morning. I once spent 2 weeks on the road in California, Oregon and Washington State with only these 2 pair of pants, 2 tops, a sweater, and a jean jacket.
They weren’t anything fancy or expensive when I picked them up at the mall. Not touted as some techno-marvel travel pants. Yet that’s exactly what they turned out to be.
I also love these Crocs sandals. I wear them until the tread is worn so thin they are absolutely life-threatening dangerous to wear on a slick surface.
And that is the state that this current pair is in. I hope Crocs are still making them because I want to purchase pair #3 this summer.
Any suggestions on where to get some light-weight, easy-care cropped pants for summer? What clothes/shoes make up a “summer uniform” for you?
Rock on,

Can you guess my theme for this year’s A-Z Challenge? All of my A-Z posts this month will be tied into my theme, which is represented by the title of a song that was popular when I was a child. Can you figure it out as the days (and posts) go by? Leave your guesses (one per day only, please) in the comments. At the end of the challenge, I will reveal the theme. Have fun!
I just switched over my clothes this weekend so your timing is perfect to talk about a summer wardrobe. I’m planning to do a lot of work on my property this spring and summer so expect I’ll be living in my usual track pants or light, quick dry casual pants along with my usual assortment of t-shirts. At last count, I have 15 t-shirts that should probably just be worn around home (and discarded at the end of summer), another 9 or 10 that I can wear for walks with friends or a workout, and another dozen slightly dressier ones for ‘good’. A fashion plate, I am not, although I do own a summer dress and a few colourful tops if I ever go anywhere really fancy.
I love the way you travel light, Deb. Two weeks with just those clothes is awesome. Good luck finding replacements for the pants.
Hi Karen,
I travelled light as a challenge, and also because JD was dying at the time and it was our last trip together and clothing was the last thing on my mind. So it was the KISS principle all the way!
Since then, I’ve continued to travel as light as possible. I never check luggage anymore if I can help it.
First of all, I love the birks – they are part of my summer uniform. I have about 5 pair of birkenstock sandals. So sandals are a huge part of my summer (I also have dress black/brown/blue sandals). I love capri pants (that’s what we call them) but I recently started wearing skorts – skirts with shorts underneath. These are really comfy too. So, was “In the Summertime” the song?
Capri pants, of course! We call them that here too – I forgot the name. Thanks Karen. I’ll reveal the song at the end of the challenge. Stay tuned!
A discussion about summer wardrobe is a timely one as the weather has finally made a turn for the better.
My Birkies are a year-round thing. They are something I wear only around the house since I do not like walking around in bare feet. Shoes rather than sandals still play a big part of my summertime – cycling shoes, running shoes, hiking shoes, golf shoes – and I have no specific pair of sandals that I go to … well except the Birkies. I’m all about variety 🙂
I’m currently in the process of redefining my summer wardrobe. Since I retired, I’ve been all about T-shirts and cropped blue jeans but it’s time for a makeover. I’m all about change and 7 years is a long time for me to be stuck in the same wardrobe rut.
Hehehe…you’re trying to get out of a rut Joanne, and I’m trying to find my rut…er…groove again! 😆
You know you’re right 🙂
I have those Crocs in the photo but I have other Crocs I like better…their cross-trainers for example are cool but give a lot of support. Don’t just buy Crocs in the stores. They have tons of styles online that never make it to the retail outlets.
If you sew you could take one of your favorite pants apart and use it for a pattern to make some more. I don’t think that style would be in the pattern books—it’s really old—but could try looking and find a seamstress to make them if you don’t sew. When you get that many years worth of wear out of them the extra cost would be worth it.
That’s a great idea Jean! I used to sew all my clothes in another life. I’m sure I could find a pattern or make my own as you suggested. The problem would be finding that miraculous fabric.
That sounds like a wonderful summer uniform, Deb. That is how you tell quality clothing…when you can get a lot of use out of them. They don’t make anything that lasts anymore – we are definitely in a throw away society. 🙁 My summer uniform is various styles and colors of shorts and t shirts and a pair of sandals (I usually favor Dr. Scholls) but last year I tried a pair of flip flops and managed to use them the entire summer. I like how easy it is to slide either on and go. I don’t like the sandals I have to fasten around my ankle – preferring to slide into them instead. I also have a few skirts for Sunday mornings when I want to dress up a bit. Great post…I need to go through and change out my clothes in my dresser. I am in the middle of a purge so this is a good time to do that come to think of it. 😉
I’m with you on the slip-on sandals, Susan. Ain’t nobody got time for that when summer fun is to be had!!! Thanks!
I’m still wearing winter clothes here. No coats or hats, but jeans and turtlenecks. I adore my Birks, but have never had a pair of Crocs. Your nail colors are pretty, too. Suddenly I’m reminded that I need a pedicure.
Thank you Ally! Yeah, still mostly in winter duds here too but this week was able to sneak a few warmer weather options in. Next week is looking even better, weather-wise. As it should, being May, for gawd’s sake.
I love capri pants for the summer too and my go-to sandals are a pair of aebo ones that I love. When you find something that fits well, you want to stick with it. Weekends In Maine
Never heard of aebo sandals – I’m going to check them out, as well as your blog. Yep, I am a big believer of sticking with what works. If I like a piece of clothing, I’ll buy it in multiple colours, like my capris. Thanks for the comment!
