The Sunday Schnauzer – Trench Warfare

Note: I wrote and scheduled this post to run weeks ago. No, I have not magically recovered from Covid-19. I am still isolating from the world.

The forestry company that manages the trails Bowser and I walk on just about every day has decided to dig a bunch of trenches at all the entrances to our trail. This is apparently to discourage motorized traffic on their roads. Last year there were people setting up camp down by the creek (even an RV got down there, somehow!) so I do understand why they want to discourage this behaviour. And I get dismayed by the amount of trash that I pick up (the stuff small enough to carry, anyways) that gets left behind by the campers and partiers. But does this strategy even work?

Our first trench enounter. There is a small slice of walkable area left, on the side.
After 100 metres or so, we encounter a second trench. No pathway left for walkers.
I clamber carefully down into the trench.
Bowser waits patiently for me to scramble back up the other side.
At another access point, we find this: someone with a quad or what-have-you has broken a new trail around the trench. Which we took full advantage of.

Sure enough, a few days later Bowser and I had to step off the trail to allow a mud-encrusted pickup (not related to the forestry folks; just a good ol’ boy enjoying the dirt) to roar by us. Good job, Trench creators!

So I ask you, great minds at the Forestry: what did digging these fucking bullshit trenches accomplish? Other than making it hard for us who walk your trails to enjoy them?

Feelin’ salty, but keeping those elbows up!

    1. That’s almost always the way though, isn’t it? Years ago, someone tried to bring materials for a bomb onto a plane and we’ve had to take off our shoes and restrict liquids in our carryons ever since. 🤷‍♀️ Thanks, Sheree 💕

  1. What a mess! Are they going to clean it up… or is that the finished product?
Sorry to hear about you catching Covid. Hope it passes quickly.
    💕

    1. To stop motorized traffic from bombing through the bush (and potentially starting fires). Also to stop people from setting up camp(s) on this land. I don’t mind the company protecting the land they manage, but what they are doing is not effective. Thanks, Ally 💕

  2. I thought that after the debacle of World War I, they abandoned trench warfare.

It’s pretty hard to stop RVs and four-wheel drives. They can be about as agile as hikers.

    1. Yes! These are machines built to go around and over obstacles. The forestry creates these trenches every couple of years and apparently have learned nothing from previous attempts to keep motorized vehicles off this land. 🤷‍♀️ Thanks, TG 💕

    1. The Forestry has put concrete barriers at every entrance but of course the vehicles just create new paths on either side of them. Even cutting down trees if they have to. This would happen with metal barriers as well. The only thing I think would work would be catching the interlopers and fining the hell out of them. Thanks, Kate 💕

So sorry to hear you’re not feeling great. Hope you feel better soon. 😷 😊 As for the trenches and the people who drive around them, sounds like trumpers to me. That type of behavior is de rigueur down here in Trumpland.😜😵😥

    1. Those kinds of people can be found anywhere, unfortunately. They only care about themselves and rules don’t apply to them. And the rest of us pay the price. Thanks, Bobi 💕

  4. Its crazy that they would dig it up like that. 10 concrete barriers set up at random angles near the entrances should do the job. Those trenches are a huge liability. I thought maybe they were doing drainage ditches. Hard to believe people would chop down trees to access the path. A couple of trail cams and a super HUGE fine might work better.

    1. Agreed! And there are concrete barriers also. None of these things are effective at stopping those who want to take their vehicles down the forestry trails. Thanks, Bernie 💕

  5. That’s horrible – the trenches, the roaring truck and that you have not miraculously recovered yet (which I had hoped when I first opened this post). Wishing you a very speedy recovery…and continuing to send big hugs!

    1. Thank you my friend 💕 I am still testing positive although the line seems to be less strong. My abs have been getting quite the workout from coughing 😂. I feel like I’ve turned a corner, though.

  6. Sorry to hear you’re down with the COVID bug…hopefully you’re feeling better every day!! Those trenches are no joke and they appear to work better on walkers than drivers UGH!!!!
