What’s On Your Plate Blog Challenge – Give Peas A Chance Edition

Despite a cold, wet spring here on the Island, things are happening in my little garden! And I am “shopping” daily in my backyard to put things on my plate.

I planted peas for the first time – snow, sugar snap and shelling peas – all of which are becoming my go-to snacks as well as being featured at meal time.

The snow peas are abundant!
And the shelling peas are catching up.

I’ve been making a lot of these simple and quick rice bowl meals.

No recipe – just a variety of peas from the garden, cooked rice, a protein (smoked sausage, here) and a dollop of Sambal Badjak (Indonesian pepper paste) run through it all.
One of my favourite meals…

And for dessert?

The raspberries are starting!!!
Another simple meal of berries and yogurt.

Please join me and my co-host Donna (she’s back!!!) and let us know what’s on your plate this month! Feel free to leave a link in the Comments or join the Link Party:

Your garden is so ahead of mine. The only thing ready just now is green onions. The weather has been quite cool here; I’m blaming that for the slow progress. And the germination was sporadic. I just used some frozen peas in my version of a paella. Also in the kitchen this past wk: lasagna, Greek salad, butternut squash soup. I also made a rhubarb crisp for the neighbors & chocolate chip cookies to have on hand in the freezer. I found a ham bone in the fridge freezer yesterday so made some baked beans using the last jar of pineapple zucchini (recipe on line). Your garden looks great.

    1. We are finally getting some heat, here on the island…and the garden is responding accordingly. Also had struggles with germination and some that did sprout are on the struggle bus due to being nibbled on, and the cold start but oh well, that is life! Thanks, Mona 💕

  2. Lately, your posts are as close as I get to healthy eating or enjoying summer. Our 110-degree days are killing every potential garden plant in sight.

    1. Yikes! I can’t imagine trying to do anything at those temps except stay indoors next to the A/C. I left Ontario for the west coast partly due to the cold winters but also due to the stifling and humid summers. I could never just have the windows open and enjoy the weather. I hope you can catch a break or get away, Kieran. Thanks 💕

  3. Your garden sounds fab … and you can grow raspberries! There’s not much better than fresh peas – of any description.

I love how you say you are shopping for dinner in your garden! Absolutely beautiful produce with simple, tasty ways to enjoy them. Your photos made me feel inspired to try and do more in my garden. Currently harvesting a few passionfruit and lemons as it’s winter here.

    1. I haven’t tried but I suspect we don’t have enough hot weather for melons, Janis. I’m not a big fan of frozen or canned peas, but fresh peas are a whole other story, let me tell ya 😋. Thank you 💕

Hi Deb – my perfect meal too … I must try the Sambal Badjak … I’ve been using sun-dried tomato and parmesan paste rather too much recently. Raspberries … especially straight from the garden – you’re doing so well with ‘your estate’ … cheers and keep on enjoying the fruits and veg of your labour. Hilary
