Last Friday, I reunited with Donna (home from an extended visit to the mainland) and we went for a walk down to the Parksville Community Beach. The annual Sand Sculpture competition had resumed, after a 2 year hiatus due to Covid-19. This was my first visit. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I did taking them. The theme was the Roaring 20’s. Here are the sculptures that I deemed the best of the best (and they were all great!).
Rock on,
The WB
That was such a fun get-together — as was today’s! Sending you great BIG birthday wishes for tomorrow (hey, wait a minute…it’s already tomorrow. How did that happen?)
Thank you my friend 💕 And thank you and Richard again for giving me such a special birthday eve!
I liked the Algorithm and the Rocketeer best. The winner was certainly clever & witty, but I prefer the other two for their Roaring Twenties vibe 🙂
And a great big happy birthday – I’m sure you’ll be celebrating it well <3
Thank you, Debs 💕 I am going to be celebrating it well – with family, and hopefully a dip in the river (it’s stinking hot here right now!).
Fabulastic, Deb. Thanks for sharing these beauties and happy birthday!!
Thank you, Liesbet! 💕
I’m always stunned by how intricate sand sculptures can be. Hope the birthday fun continues.
🎈🎂🎈
Me too. I can’t even make a rudimentary structure with a plastic bucket and shovel🤣. Thank you, Rivergirl 💕
Such talent. I have no idea how they do that with sand.
You and me both. There was an employee walking around spritzing each sculpture with water on a regular basis, to keep them from drying out and blowing away I guess. Thank you, AJ 💕
What great talent on display! But none of them really captured the Roaring 20s theme except maybe the guys in the overcoats and the guy with the horn.
I think following the theme was perhaps optional. There were sculptures where I thought maybe the artist didn’t get the memo 😁. Thanks, Jean 💕
Just WOW! 😮
I know! I was so glad Donna and I went to see this. I don’t think I have ever been to something like this before. Very impressive in person! Thanks, Joanne 💕
Hi Deb – those sculptures always beggar belief … don’t they – quite extraordinary – I’ve been to a show here … but these are fun to see, while I love their ‘quips’ … those two broads of Parksville don’t do badly either – I guess the local birthday girl will be a year younger tomorrow – have a fantastic day … excellent fun photos – thank you … cheers Hilary
I like your idea of being a year younger 🤣. I have a friend who subtracts a year off her age every year on her birthday LOL! Today is the day however, and I don’t mind turning 63. Thank you, Hilary 💕
Congratulations for today … happy times and fun experiences ahead … looking good for xx – cheers Hilary
Thank you, Hilary! 💕
What a massive amount of talent!!
I really loved the Two Faces of beauty; very clever.
I thought so too! Thanks, Suz 💕
They are huge! I wonder how long it took to make them?
Those are incredible! We’ve been in Nanaimo now for 10 of our 30 day vacation and have enjoyed our daily hikes in your beautiful area (ala Donna’s spreadsheet of hikes). Is there a publication that lists events like the sand sculptures?
Not that I know of, but there should be! I learn of things like this through social media. Glad you are enjoying the island! Thanks, Sheila 💕
They should note the time to create beside each sculpture. I’d like to know that too! Thanks, Kate 💕
Ever neat Deb!
Leslie
Agreed! Thanks, Leslie 💕
Amazing art. Too bad it can’t last.
That makes it extra special! Thanks, Kieran 💕
Wow. Those sculptures are amazing. I’m looking forward to wandering along Rathtrevor beach next month. I’ve never been there and I do love the ocean.
Rathtrevor is an amazing park and the beaches there are perfect for wandering! I hope you love it as much as I do. Thanks, Pixie 💕
Spectacular sculptures! Thank you for sharing, and a very happy birthday to you! 🎉🥂
Thank you very much, Hot Goddess 💕
What amazing talent and too bad these weren’t in stone so folks bring them home- but then that would defeat the purpose and whole beauty of sculpting with sand!
I enjoyed each selection and thanks for bringing some art into my morning – and love the image of you two
Thank you very much 💕
Amazing artistry! We have a big event like that here too and I’m always blown away by what they can achieve with sand and water. I think my favorite one is Rocketeer. Happy birthday, Deb!
It is SO amazing…and all that work for something so temporary! Makes it extra special, to me anyways. Thank you, Janis 💕
What a bunch of very talented artists. I love it, but all the tents, ropes and temporary walls really mess with the aesthetic. I guess it’s necessary to keep out vandals?? Or to keep in paying customers?? Happy Birthday – great photo of you and Donna
This event is “pay by donation” and the tents were set up for a private event. Yeah, it would be nicer to have it out in the open, but – people being people – this is why we can’t have the nice things…Thank you, Suzanne 💕
Wow, those are excellent sand sculptures! And the winner, how clever. Nice to see your smiling faces together again.
I thought the winner was quite clever, especially with the bitcoin symbols…thank you, Tracey 💕
Those are impressive looking. A few of them don’t even look like sand. Love the Louis Armstrong one. – Marty
I thought they were quite impressive too! Thanks, Marty 💕
