H is for Hiking

My “home” trail, in June – the Mill Pond Trail

I love to get out on the trail. It’s something that has helped me clear my mind and exercise my body since I was a small child.

I credit my dad mainly, for instilling this love of the outdoors in me. I talked about this in a previous A-Z challenge post, here.

In the summer, my hiking behaviour changes. I don’t do the heat well anymore. So my hikes are shorter, and in the very early morning or later in the evening. Or on heavily shaded trails. But I still get out there.

Cooling my toes in Point Pelee, on Canada Day – July
Elora Gorge in August – taking a break from Riverfest to stretch my legs
Kelowna, in September – I tried to stick to the lakeshore trails as much as I could while I walked back and forth to the hospital to visit with my sister.
Coming back from a hike along the riverbank on a late summer night, in the Village

Do you still get out and hike in the summer? Are your summer hikes different from your spring/fall/winter ones?

Rock on,

The WB

Can you guess my theme for this year’s A-Z Challenge? All of my A-Z posts this month will be tied into my theme, which is represented by the title of a song that was popular when I was a child. Can you figure it out as the days (and posts) go by? Leave your guesses (one per day only, please) in the comments. At the end of the challenge, I will reveal the theme. Have fun!

  1. Now you’re talking my language! Spring and Fall hiking are the best! I’m with you that if I do hike in the summer it will be early morning. Between the heat and the bugs, it’s not as appealing. However, in our higher elevations, it can still be cool enough to do some summer hiking.

  2. Most of my hikes are unintentional ones in that they’re about climbing over rough terrain while walking with my dogs. Doing a more sustained, planned hike is on my list, preferably during the cooler fall days when the leaves are turning. I’d love to do that.

H is for Hundreds and Thousands

  3. We don’t hike much any more. It’s usually in the fall when we do go out on the trails. I’m hoping that once we’re both happily retired and organized, we’ll go out year round. Of course we’ll never have anywhere as beautiful as your trails to hike on. Lovely photos.

  4. My love of hiking is relatively new compared to you. I didn’t start hiking until after I retired, with considerable pressure from Helen to do the Bruce. It’s been a deep love ever since. What’s better than being outdoors surrounded by trees, preferably close to a lake, stream or other body of water? 💕

Lovely photos – the Mill Pond Trail looks very different in summer, compared to winter!
I actually enjoy hiking in summer the least – the heat and humidity play a huge part of that, but also the dense growth on some trails … snakes … biting things …. snakes …. more biting things ….

Loved all your photos and I lust over those shoes. They look like a pair of Crocs.I used to have. ‘Walking on the Wild Side” is my song guess.

    1. Someday I will go back to California and do some hiking. I have been there several times now, for work, and was able to take some time to drive the Pacific Coast Highway and also the mountains. Such a beautiful place. Thanks for the comment, Silvia!

  6. My Dad always took us kids to the woods every Sunday afternoon. I always feel like I’ve “arrived home” when I’m in the woods – especially deep summer hardwood bush when all nature seems to hold its breath…

Here's where the magic happens. I love comments!
