A is for Art in the Outdoors

One of the things I am looking forward to when the weather gets better is doing AND seeing art outside. Also, taking photographs that I can later translate into a sketch or painting back in my laundry room/studio.

Last September (when summer weather actually, finally arrived here in Ontario), I came across this neat piece behind the Alton Mill Art Centre:

Face in the water in Alton

And I came across these wonderful pieces on a walk around Crawford Lake:

Wood carving of bird on a hand
Monarch Butterfly
Temporary installation of art by an Indigenous artist. I thought I had taken a snap of the information regarding this artist but couldn’t find it on my phone.

Last summer I took many photos that I hoped to someday turn into paintings. Here is one I took last August, when I was visiting my sister in Kelowna:

Smoky sunset over Lake Okanagan, due to ongoing forest fires close by

This photo was the basis for a painting that I discussed in this post.

I am looking forward to more outdoor art adventures in the warm days to come!

Rock on,

The WB

Can you guess my theme for this year’s A-Z Challenge? All of my A-Z posts this month will be tied into my theme, which is represented by the title of a song that was popular when I was a child. Can you figure it out as the days (and posts) go by? Leave your guesses (one per day only, please) in the comments. At the end of the challenge, I will reveal the theme. Have fun!

  1. No guesses yet, Deb, but definitely appreciation for the beautiful outdoor art. I believe that beauty is essential to our lives and souls – in fact, it’s the topic for tomorrow’s A-Z post! And while nature is beautiful in and of itself, it seems to me that natural beauty is enhanced by the art inhabiting outdoor spaces.

No theme guesses from me either but I enjoyed the photos of outdoor art. We have a sculpture garden here where I live and they have a piece similar to that face in your first photo. The installation by that water fall would have been interesting to watch.

  3. Beautiful outdoor art! Last summer I went to a women’s sculpture park in Norway, all work was done about or by women, it was amazing. Wishing for warmer days for you so you can get back out there.

  4. I’m familiar with the carvings at Crawford Lake and I was equally taken with them. It was one of those wonderfully unexpected finds.

So a game isn’t fun unless people play along, so I’m going to take my first stab at your theme. I think it’s related to art, I’m guessing the song is from the late 60s to early 70s, and so my first wild guess is Don McLean’s Starry, Starry Night – a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh.

    1. Thanks Joanne, for ramping up the fun factor! You are indeed a brave soul, taking a stab at my theme after only one post! You have the time period right but not the song – I don’t even know that one! I’d better not give away any more clues….You’re lucky I’m feeling generous tonight, or could it be the wine I had with dinner…hmmmm???

  5. I LOVE art found in the outdoors, and you have shared such incredible pieces, and in such lovely settings! My favourite is the face in the fountain!

And I love the sunset capture! Beautiful composition! I can imagine the inspiration it will bring to your painting!

Here's where the magic happens. I love comments!
